What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled force applied by a chiropractor to a joint, typically the spine, to restore normal movement and correct misalignments called subluxations.

Chiropractors in the Klang Valley perform adjustments by applying a precise, rapid force to joints that have lost normal motion. The technique uses the chiropractor's hands, and sometimes specialized instruments, to move a joint through its range of motion with the aim of restoring function and reducing pain. Spinal adjustments are the most common type, though chiropractors also adjust joints in the shoulders, hips, knees, and other areas.

An adjustment differs fundamentally from massage or stretching. Massage works on soft tissue (muscles and connective tissue) to ease tension and improve circulation. Stretching is a passive or active lengthening of muscles. An adjustment, by contrast, targets joint motion directly. It creates a specific movement in the joint itself, often producing an audible sound called a cavitation as pressure changes in the joint space. This sudden movement is intended to break restrictions and restore the joint's natural gliding motion.

Chiropractors believe restricted joint movement, called a subluxation, interferes with nerve function and overall health. By restoring motion through adjustment, they aim to reduce pain, improve posture, and support the body's healing. Some people seek adjustments for acute pain from injury or strain, while others use them as part of ongoing wellness care. The force and technique are calibrated to the individual and the specific joint being treated.
