What is sacroiliac joint dysfunction?
Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is a condition where the sacroiliac joint connecting the sacrum to the pelvis becomes misaligned or unstable, causing pain in the lower back, buttocks, and hip region.
The sacroiliac joint (SI joint) is where the base of your spine, called the sacrum, connects to the pelvis on each side. These two joints transfer force between your upper body and legs, and they normally move only slightly. When the joint becomes misaligned (subluxated), too loose (hypermobile), or too tight (hypomobile), dysfunction occurs.
SI joint dysfunction causes localized pain in the lower back, buttocks, or hip, often concentrated on one side. Some people feel sharp pain when standing up from a chair or walking, while others notice discomfort during specific movements like climbing stairs or bending. The condition develops from poor posture, muscle imbalances, previous injuries, or repetitive strain.
Chiropractors in the Klang Valley region commonly assess SI joint dysfunction through palpation and movement tests to detect misalignment. They use spinal manipulation and adjustments targeting the sacrum and pelvis to restore proper joint alignment and stability. Additional care may include soft tissue therapy to address tight muscles around the joint and advice on posture and movement patterns that avoid aggravating the joint.
SI joint dysfunction is significant because pain here can limit daily activities and is sometimes mistaken for other lower back problems. Proper diagnosis and targeted treatment help prevent the condition from worsening or affecting other parts of the spine and pelvis.
