What is a subluxation?

In chiropractic practice, a subluxation is a vertebral misalignment or joint dysfunction thought to impair nerve function and overall health, distinct from the medical term for partial joint dislocation.

The chiropractic subluxation refers to a misalignment or dysfunction of a vertebra that practitioners believe disrupts normal nerve transmission and biomechanics of the spine. Unlike the medical definition, which describes a partial dislocation where bones lose normal contact, the chiropractic concept emphasizes functional interference rather than gross structural separation.

Chiropractors in the Klang Valley and elsewhere argue that subluxations arise from physical trauma, poor posture, stress, or repetitive strain. They contend these misalignments can compress or irritate nerves exiting the spinal column, potentially affecting organ function and causing pain or dysfunction throughout the body. The theory suggests that correcting subluxations through spinal adjustment restores proper nerve flow and promotes healing.

It is important to understand that the subluxation model operates within chiropractic philosophy and differs significantly from conventional medical and neurological frameworks. Medical practitioners typically do not recognize the chiropractic subluxation as a valid diagnosis, as imaging and clinical evidence do not consistently support the proposed mechanisms. The term itself has been a subject of debate within the healthcare field for decades.

When consulting with a chiropractor, patients should be aware of this distinction and understand how the practitioner uses the term. Clear communication about the rationale behind recommended treatments helps patients make informed decisions about their care.
