What is trigger point therapy?

Trigger point therapy is a manual technique in which a chiropractor or massage therapist applies sustained pressure to hyperirritable knots in muscle tissue to release tension and alleviate pain.

Trigger points are tight, sensitive knots that develop within muscle fibers or the fascia surrounding them. These hyperirriable spots often form from repetitive strain, poor posture, overuse, or injury. When compressed or activated, trigger points can produce localized pain and refer pain to distant areas of the body, sometimes creating symptoms far from the actual problem site.

Trigger point therapy applies direct, sustained pressure to these knots using fingers, thumbs, elbows, or specialized tools. The goal is to deactivate the trigger point by breaking the cycle of muscle tension and nerve irritation. As pressure is held, the muscle fibers gradually relax and blood flow improves, allowing the tissue to release. This technique differs from general massage because it targets specific problem areas rather than broad muscle groups.

The treatment is commonly used to address neck stiffness, lower back pain, shoulder tension, and headaches. Many people experience relief within a session or two, though chronic trigger points may require ongoing care. Chiropractic and massage therapy practitioners in Klang Valley integrate trigger point work into broader treatment plans to restore movement quality and prevent injury recurrence.
